THINGS TO SEE AND DO
|
Outdoor
activities There is plenty to do in this sphere. If you like watersports try the Water Sports Centre or if you like Golf look at UK Golf courses. The best mode of transport is the bicycle and these, in all shapes and sizes, are available for hire from Millport. There is a riding stable and there are tennis courts, crazy golf, a fun fair and beaches in Millport and plenty of walks and sandy beaches around the island. Historic Visit Vinkingar in Largs or the Kelburn Country Centre with its nature walks and adventure playgrounds for children. The Bard, Robert Burnss, birthplace at Alloway is not far to the south and more can be found about Ayrshire in general from the Ayrshire and Arran Tourist Board. Here is a link to more local information. You can also go for a cruise on the last sea-going paddle steamer in the world, the Waverley. Indoor activies The Island's Marine Biology Station has an interesting Museum and Aquarium. There is a small local museum and during the summer months films are shown at the Town Hall. The Magnum Leisure Centre in Irvine offers many activities, such as skating and roller ball. |

Special
Events Every year the Island is taken over by the "Wild West". The annual Country and Western Festival has become a popular and well known event, with rodeos, shoot outs, re-enactments and, of course, four days of solid music. Millport becomes Nashville or the OK Corral and you may bump into Doc Holliday, Butch Cassidy, Wyatt Earp, Sitting Bull, Geronimo and General Custer all on the same day. This year the festival is from 3rd September to 5th September, 2004. Enquiries to 01475 530748 |
